I love to be outdoors and relish being surrounded by nature. When I rest my head on the floor of my tent, I feel safe and peaceful. When I see a deer, a snake or a bear, I feel joy and connection. Not everyone shares my comfort level. Last summer I took a good friend camping. She had never been camping before. While I’m the type of gal who mows her own yard, uses power tools regularly, and could probably fix my car in an emergency, my friend Carol lives in a condo, has her nails and hair done twice a month and typically has some macho guy in her life. I was shocked when Carol asked to go camping with me, but welcomed her company. Our trip went surprisingly well and here are a few tips that may help.

1. Prepare by doing some on line research. See what the camping area is like. Pick a pretty camping area that’s close to home and not too isolated. Check out temperatures, wildlife, recreational opportunities and any known dangers. If there is any wildlife in the area that could pose a threat, such as a poisonous snake or bear, find out how to identify the animal and what to do if you see one. Most likely, if you camp in a populated area, you will not see any wildlife other than the guys next door.

2. Easy does it. If you are going with seasoned campers, insist your first trip is a very short. I’d recommend an overnight trip for your first experience. If possible pick a camp site within a two hour drive from home. Also, insist that you are not included in any athletic marathon-type actives. Take a hike, but keep it less than 2 miles. If you feel like doing another hike later, select another hike less 2 miles. 2 miles in the woods is much more vinous than 2 miles at the gym.

3. Keep an open mind. You never know how you will feel surrounded by nature. Some people feel like they are born for the first time. Other people struggle with panic attacks and cut their trip short. If you find yourself feeling uncomfortable remind yourself this trip will end soon, do some deep breathing and see what you can discover for the rest of your trip. It’s very common with new campers, to experience joy, boredom, fear, and excitement.

4. Pack light but bring a variety of clothes to deal with heat and cold. Be prepared to let vanity go. Pack a swimsuit (even if you hate how you look in it), a warm outfit (like a sweat suit or a fleece outfit), a cool outfit (shorts and a tank top), and comfortable walking shoes.

5. Select and pack other items for comfort and safety. You’ll need a warm sleeping bag and pillow, a portable mat to place under your sleeping bag, drinking water (check with campsite), a working flashlight, toothbrush, personal hygiene products, bug spray or wipes with DEET, and food. Many campgrounds have lists of recommended items to pack. I like to carry a small pocket knife, a first aid kit, dental floss or a small rope, and a small handheld product called a screacher (this is great to use if you get lost in the woods).

6. Pack a few items to occupy your mind. Bring a comfortable chair and something non-electric so you can keep your mind busy. Books, magazines or crossword puzzles are good. It’s also fun to bring an outdoor game, like lawn darts or croquette. Many first time campers are not used to having so much free time and often struggle with boredom, unless their prepared.

7. Don’t take a solo trip. If you are single and want to try camping for the first time, try to connect with a group in your area. Many sporting stores know of well respected camping groups. If possible, always go with an experienced camper.

8. Take care of yourself. If you and your camping party get scared during the night, sleep in the car with the windows slightly cracked, doors locked and your keys in the ignition. That way everyone can get some sleep, but you don’t have to cut your trip short. If you get scared and your friends are not, tell someone you’re sleeping in the car, lock the car doors and crack the windows, but make sure your friends have the car keys so they can come to the car if needed. Most people learn to love sleeping in a tent, but others feel very vulnerable. Sometimes it’s nice to sleep in the car if you don’t feel secure in a tent.

There is nothing like the peace of laying in a tent, and listening to crickets and other wildlife as I drift off to sleep. Tent camping is a wonderful, inexpensive hobby. But, it’s not for everyone. If you like camping but want a comfortable bed at the end of the day, book a reservation at a state or national park. Many of them have affordable rustic cabins or hotel rooms that have great access to nature.

• Bassinet, Co-Sleeper/Crib or a Pack and Play for your bedroom.

For the first 12 weeks, you’ll be feeding your baby every 2 to 4 hours so having him in your room will help keep you from having to shuffle back and forth to the nursery. Be sure to get your car seat inspected or installed at the hospital where you will be delivering. You will not be able to leave the hospital with your newborn without a proper car seat so have this installed 1-week before your due date if you can.

• High Chair

You won’t need a high chair until your baby is at least 5-6 months old so you might want to hold off on this purchase for awhile.

• Baby Bumbo Sitter

Once your baby is about 3 months old and has some neck control, this is great! They can sit it in it for everything.

• Baby Bath Tub

It’s important to start off with a small bath tub because in a small space with just a little bit of water, you gain confidence in how to hold and handle your baby. I love those that have the sling because until about 3 or 4 months old they don’t have any neck control. The sling helps you keep them in place.

• Bouncy/vibrating seat and/or swing

Having somewhere safe to put your infant while you cook or get dressed is vital and babies love the motion they provide.


• Large comfortable rocking chair

• Sound Machine – These are great for helping to soothe your baby. They play sounds from the mothers womb, water sounds, sounds from nature etc. They even come inside of soft stuffed animals.

• Baby Monitoring System – There are many options out there now including video monitoring systems so you can see the baby in his or her crib. Dual monitors or multiple monitors are a must if you have multiple levels in your home or your master bedroom is on a different level altogether. There are also remote pager systems so you can clip it on and listen as you go room to room.

• Breast Pump & Accessories

• Nursing Pillows – I like the Boppy. It can be used by the baby too, so it serves multiple purposes. The Brest Friend, however provides good support and leverage and has a strap you can tie around you if you need to be mobile. It also has a pouch that zips to put things in.

• CD Player with Head Phones and Audio Books – For you when you’re up in the night with the baby

• Baby Car Mirror – Since kids are rear-facing until they are about a year old and/or 20+ lbs., I love this. It allows you to see your baby through your rearview mirror. Some of them will even entertain your baby with lights and songs.

• Activity Mat or Baby Gym/ crib mobile – If you get a mobile for the crib or pack n play, make sure it’s colorful and musical. The same goes for activity mats. Be sure the toys include mirrors and sounds.


I highly recommend all cotton. It’s soft and can be washed in hot water to sterilize. Everything should be washed with a mild detergent, like Dreft, before coming in contact with your baby. During the first six months, wash babies clothes separately from the other laundry. The baby’s bedding should keep your newborn comfortable and safe. Use only quality, breathable materials and avoid fluffy things until your baby is able to move items like blankets from his/her face.

• 3 stretch cotton-fitted sheets for the bassinet, and later for the crib

• 4 cotton blankets that can be used for swaddling

• 3 warmer blankets

When it comes to babies clothing, it’s all about layers. One key thing to know is that babies can’t regulate their temperature very well until they’re about six moths old. It’s very easy for them to get overheated or too cold. It’s up to you to keep the temperature right through layering of clothes and the use of blankets.

Think about the practicality and ease of dressing. Make sure the crotch opens easily for diaper changing. Soft and easy to change outfits are recommended since you will probably be changing your baby several times a day.

• 4-6 sleepers

• Diapers – Your baby will go through roughly five thousand diapers before he’s potty trained! And in the early days you may be changing your baby up to 12 times a day. Whether you plan to use disposables, recycled, cloth or a diaper service, be sure to have plenty on hand.

• Diaper wipes – I like the unscented ones for the first several months

• Diaper Bag – Get a nice durable bag with large pockets and make sure that it always has:

Kitchens figure among the important rooms of the entire house. Recently, a lot of attention is being paid to their presentation and decoration. This is because the concept of a kitchen being just an interior-cooking place has undergone transformation. So Long, Sleeping Pills!

Whether you are a hard-charging executive or a hard-working stay-at-home parent, insomnia or other sleep disorders can be devastating to your energy levels and productivity. Whenever people have trouble sleeping, their first thought is usually of sleeping pills. Television ads run by pharmaceutical companies lead us to believe that these medications are safe, effective and approved for long-term use. However, you should consider the following facts before racing off to your doctor for a prescription. You may want to think about gentler natural alternatives.

First, are sleeping pills as effective as you've been led to believe? If you want to fall sleep tonight and you take a prescription sleep aid, then you will probably be able to. But one night is not really the problem, is it? Your goal is to eliminate your sleep problem completely. That is, you want to do what's necessary to fall into sleep quickly and stay sleep for the optimum number of hours.

Unfortunately, if you're on a pill to achieve this goal, the pill will let you down in a big way. The more likely result is that the medication will be a little less effective each time you take it. On top of that, you're at risk for developing a long-term chemical dependency.

Some formulations have been with us since ancient times. There are also adjustments you can make to your diet, lifestyle and sleeping environment that will have a much more beneficial effect on your sleep than chemical solutions.

Do not allow yourself to be hooked by the promises of television advertising. Imagine how wonderful it would be to go through your day with a clear mind and a quick step, all because you made the natural choice.

Tip – I Just Set the Alarm on My Timex Ironman Watch and I Can’t Turn the Darn Thing Off!

Haven’t we all had moments like this!

You had nothing but the best intentions of course, when you set yourTimex IRONMAN Watch for 6:30am. You were determined to do that morning run if it killed you!

Of course best intentions are all good, but when 6:30am rolled around, your first reaction was predictable wasn’t it… at that moment in time, you wanted nothing better than to DESTROY your Timex IRONMAN watch, or at least turn that darn beeping off so as to squeeze another hour of sleep in before work!

Ok, so you probably (somehow) managed to turn the thing off. Or maybe you took the easier route and just pulled your pillow tightly over your ears until the damn thing stopped, and it worked.. Briefly, but now the #@”! thing goes off EVERY morning at 6:30am like, er… clockwork! Arrrrgggg! why do those IRONMAN watches have to be so efficient??

While I’ve heard a sledgehammer is a common solution to this common problem, please don’t despair, for I show you a way to unset your alarm that does not involve the mutilation of your timepiece.

The standard Timex IRONMAN watch looks something like the layout below:

Please note: I am attempting to keep this information as general as possible, however there are many Timex IRONMAN watch models on the market and this information might not apply precicely to every single model out there. I do believe the ALARM function works in a similar way in many IRONMAN watches and what I say here will apply in most cases.

Ok, so when the alarm is going off, simply pressStart/Split orStop/Reset to disarm the alarm. To know when your alarm is armed, a clock icon will appear on the face of your Timex watch, when disarmed, the clock will disappear. If the alarm goes off and you make the mistake of waiting it out in the hope it will go away, a back-up alarm will fire up five minutes later for further tormentation.

So now the quick fix is out of the way, here is how to turn the alarm off permanently:

  • press the MODE button until you are in ALARM mode
  • press SET/RECALL to configure the alarm
  • PressSTOP/RESET (-) orSTART/SPLIT (+) to cycle through alarms
  • When you have selected the alarm you wish to erase, hold down STOP/RESET (-) to clear the selected alarm.

Ahh peace of mind at last!
